Umueri community elects new President General amid peaceful atmosphere

Umueri Community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday, 8th April 2026 elected new executive of Umueri General Assembly (UGA), led by Mr Nweke Chijioke Smart as President-General (PG).

The exercise took place at Our Lady’s Primary School field Umueri.

They were elected to pilot the affairs of the community for a period of four years in accordance with the town constitution.

The election which was peaceful and conducted in the presence of officials from the State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Matters, Police, DSS, State owned security outfits (Udo-Ga-Achi/ Agunechemba), the media and other community observers saw Mr Smart elected as the new PG polling a total of 237 votes to beat his rival, Chief Fidelis Okeanekwe who scored 6 votes.

For the position of Vice President General, Chief Nnalue Ikechukwu Edwin wins with 207 votes to defeat his two rival, Udechukwu Gregory (106 votes) and Udekwe Onochie with 11 votes respectively.

All other executive members including the Secretary General, Chief Okeke Domonic Aniekwe, were elected unopposed.

Speaking shortly after announcing the result, the Announcing the results, the Electoral Committee Chairman, Barrister Eugene Ben, described the process as peaceful with good turnout amidst tied security and conducive atmosphere.

He charged the new executive to run an accountable, transparent and all-inclusive administration.

In his acceptance speech, the new President General of Umueri General Assembly UGA, Mr Nweke Chijioke Smart, pledged to partner Anambra State Government to transformed Umueri community beyond human imagination.

According to him, my vision is tagged; “Think Umueri First”. The people of Umueri community will not regret electing me to lead them for a good period of four years.

“I will ensure peace, unity, orderliness and proper development in the community. I will ensure that peace and unity is totally restored in the community.

“I will also make sure that whatever thing we do will be within the ambit of the law guiding Umueri community.

The PG commended the electoral officers for conducting the exercise without being biased.

In their separate remarks, the Executive Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon Ifeamyi Chinweze, Traditional ruler of Umueri community, Igwe Ben Emeka, 2027 APGA aspirant for Anambra East State Constituency, Hon Osita Tochukwu Chidebere, expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the election.

They urged the new executive to ensure that their leadership surpassed previous administrations in all sectors of human existence.

They also commended the electoral officers, security agencies, the media and other observers for their commitment towards the peaceful process.
