Kidnappers have allegedly abducted at least 15 passengers travelling from Calabar to Oron through the Calabar waterways on Friday, April 17.

Sources at the Safe Anchor beach in Calabar, who craved anonymity, said the gun-wielding kidnappers ambushed the ferry in which the passengers were travelling and abducted them.

It is still unclear the exact number of passengers abducted during the incident, and it is also unclear if they were students travelling to write their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

Meanwhile, the Police Command in Cross River gave a terse response to inquiries.

According to the spokesman of the Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the Akwa Ibom Command was in a position to confirm the story.

In his words, “The unfortunate incident didn’t happen in my jurisdiction. I believe PPRO Akwa Ibom would provide more updates on it,” he said.

The Calabar–Oron waterway has long served as a safe haven for abductors who wreak havoc on travellers. Many continue to ply the route in high numbers, desperate to avoid the dilapidated and torturous journey on the Calabar–Itu Road.
