The South-South Zonal Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Clement Agiangie, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, on his victory in the 15 August 2026 governorship election, describing it as a clear expression of the people’s will and a reaffirmation of democratic choice in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Adeleke, candidate of the Accord Party, was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The governor-elect secured victory in 19 of the 30 local government areas, a result widely seen as decisive and reflective of strong grassroots support across the state.
Agiangie said the outcome reflects the enduring power of the ballot and the constitutional right of citizens to freely choose their leaders without intimidation or interference, stressing that political power ultimately belongs to the people and must always be respected by all stakeholders.
He noted that the Osun election has further demonstrated that democracy remains alive in Nigeria when institutions function effectively and voters are allowed to express their will without hindrance.
“We celebrate this victory as a triumph for democracy and the people’s will. The people of Osun State have spoken, and their voice must be respected. This is a reminder that leadership is not imposed but earned through trust and service,” he said.
Agiangie further congratulated Governor Adeleke on what he described as a renewed mandate, urging him to see the victory not as a personal achievement but as a responsibility to deepen good governance, accountability, and inclusive development across all sectors of the state.
He emphasized that the expectations of the people are high, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, job creation, education, healthcare delivery, and youth empowerment, adding that the governor must remain focused on delivering tangible results.
The NDC chieftain also called on the governor to consolidate existing achievements, strengthen democratic institutions at the state level, and expand opportunities for youths, women, and vulnerable groups who often bear the brunt of economic and social challenges.
According to him, inclusive governance remains key to sustaining public trust and ensuring long-term stability in the state.
Agiangie commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what he described as a relatively transparent process, as well as security agencies for maintaining order during the election. He also praised election observers, journalists, and civil society groups for their vigilance and commitment to democratic accountability.
He urged political actors across the country to respect democratic outcomes, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and prioritize issue-based engagement as Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections.
“Osun has shown the power of the ballot. Leaders must always put the people first, because democracy only thrives when the will of the people is respected and protected,” he added.
He further called on opposition parties in the state to embrace dialogue and constructive engagement with the incoming administration, stressing that development is best achieved in an atmosphere of peace and cooperation rather than political hostility.
Agiangie concluded by reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to strengthening democratic values across Nigeria, particularly in ensuring that elections continue to reflect the genuine aspirations of the people.
