The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Governorship Candidate in Cross River, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, has strongly condemned the heavy taxation and levies weighing down businesses in the state, stating that citizens are trapped in an endless cycle of economic extraction.
Speaking during a town hall meeting led by the party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, in Calabar on Saturday, Toyo lamented that small and large enterprises alike are being choked by aggressive government levies.
Welcoming the vice-presidential hopeful and his entourage – which included party leaders and governorship candidates from other states, Amb. Toyo reflected on an impromptu stop over at the popular Watt Market prior to the event. She praised Amaechi’s grassroots connection, noting that his ability to directly engage with traders defined the vibrant spirit of the current political season.

Drawing a sharp contrast between current economic hardships and the aspirations of the party, the ADC flag bearer in the state declared that the upcoming elections must center on alleviating public suffering and restoring a compassionate government.
“Another election message is that we must stop suffering. We must return back to a nation that cares for its people, and not just a nation that extracts from its people,” she declared.
Decrying the business climate in the state capital, Toyo lamented that “The taxes and levies paid in Calabar by small businesses, big businesses are just too much. Everywhere is pay pay pay. What do we want? I think it is time for us to join the chorus that APC must go.”
