Idemili North LGA renamed major road after ex-Commonwealth Secretary General, Anyaoku

The Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has officially renamed a major road called Limca road Nkpor after the former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

With the renaming, the road would now be generally known as Ichie Emeka Anyaoku Road henceforth.

The low key ceremony took place at the popular Nkpor junction Nkpor, in the council area on Wednesday, 18th, March, 2026.

Addressing the people at the event, the Executive Chairman of the Council Area, Hon Stanley Nkwoka, said the renaming was in recognition to the tremendous contribution Chief Anyaoku has offered to the development of his Obosi community, Idemili North Council Area, Anambra State, South East region, Nigeria, Africa and the entire World.

The Chairman, while unveiling the road, approved the recommendation by the state government to rename the road, saying the gesture was a testament to Chief Anyaoku’s enduring legacy and his contribution to Nigeria-International diplomatic relations.

“This gesture is a testament to the enduring legacy of Ichie Emeka Anyaoku and his contributions to Nigerian and global notification.

“Limca Road is one of the transverse old  roads connecting the newly constructed Enugu-Awka-Onitsha expressway by Boromeo junction Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State.

“We must celebrate dignity and hardwork. The renaming is for a greater goal. We are implementing what the state governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo has mapped for deserving sons and daughters of the State.

“Our illustrious and respected father has been receiving awards including street/road naming across the globe without any in his home town, so I decided with the approval of the State government to do same in appreciation for making us proud and also to spur others hardworking citizens to action.

“Idemili North Council Area under my leadership is doing this to let the World know that we recognized and appreciate his contribution to the peace and unity of not only his state of Anambra, Nigeria but to the entire World.

The Chairman commended the governor for giving approval to the gesture.

In his brief remark, Chief Osita Chidoka, who is also an indegine of Obosi community, while congratulating Chief Anyaoku, commended the Chairman for creating a motivational role model for future generations.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Anyaoku appreciated the Council Area for the recognition, describing it as the most cherish among other recognitions he has received.

Anyaoku was represented at the event by the President General of Obosi community, Barrister Chimezie Obi.

The event was also attended by leaders of the ten communities that constitute the council area.
