IT House reported that a Bloomberg report provided in-depth coverage of Apple’s ongoing work on non-invasive blood sugar monitoring technology. Conducted within the Exploratory Design Group (XDG), a new Bloomberg report today gives more information on the inner workings of the XDG team.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in his latest Power On newsletter that the XDG group “operates as a startup at Apple” with a total of several hundred people, mostly “engineers and academics.” The team is based in a building called Tantau 9, just outside Apple Park.
In terms of organization, XDG essentially operates within Apple’s hardware technology group, led by Johny Srouji, whose day-to-day operations are led by a handful of engineers and scientists. It was previously led by longtime “engineering fellow” Bill Arthurs, who passed away unexpectedly in late 2022.

While the team operates as a startup, it is still divided like other Apple divisions, the report said. People working on one project within the XDG are not allowed to communicate their work with other members of the XDG who are assigned to a different project. But members of the team are organized by skill sets rather than individual projects. This means that an engineer may work on several projects that suit his skills, rather than on one specific product.
Bloomberg explains that XDG is currently focused on developing Apple’s non-invasive blood sugar monitoring technology but has “several other projects in the works” including next-generation display technology, and AR and VR capabilities for Apple’s headset “to help people with eye problems”.
The XDG team also researches “low-power processor technology and next-generation batteries for smartphones,” which was one of the original reasons for the team’s establishment. “Many of the chip and battery technologies developed by XDG have been used in iPhones, iPads and Macs for years,” said today’s report.
It is reported that Apple’s XDG team has “enormous financial resources and space to explore countless ideas”, and it remains to be seen what the team will bring next.
