OSHA fines Mars Wrigley after workers fell into chocolate tank

Mars Wrigley Confectionary was penalised by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) when two contractors at its Pennsylvania location last year accidentally fell into a chocolate tank.

On June 9, 2022, the workers had to be saved after they fell into a tank of partially filled chocolate. To get the two workers out, authorities had to cut a hole in the tank. Both were flown, one of them by helicopter, to the hospital.

The fine has been classified as a significant citation by OSHA. According to the citation, Mars Wrigley failed to ensure that the staff knew how to properly clean the facility’s chocolate tank.

For the event, OSHA fined Mars Wrigley more than $14,500.

Meanwhile, Mars Wrigley’s spokesperson said “The safety of our Associates and outside contractors is a top priority for our business. As always, we appreciate OSHA’s collaborative approach to working with us to conduct the after-action review”.

The employees hired to clean the tank came from a different company and did not directly work for Mars Wrigley.
