By Kelvin Obambon

The Cross River State Police Command has issued a formal clarification regarding the reported arrest of Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, the member representing Obubra 1 State Constituency in the State House of Assembly.

The statement, released on Monday, March 9, 2026, seeks to address public speculation surrounding allegations of domestic violence involving the lawmaker’s wife.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, the lawmaker was not forcefully apprehended but rather reported to the station following an official invitation.

The police confirmed that both Hon. Agbor and his wife honored the invitation to the Command headquarters for questioning.

“Following an invitation by the Command, Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor and his wife honoured the invitation and reported to the Police for interrogation and questioning regarding the complaint,” the statement read.

In a notable development during the interrogation, the police revealed that the couple expressed a desire to settle the matter outside of a strictly punitive framework. The Command noted that this shift came following appeals made by the lawmaker’s wife.

“During the engagement, both parties indicated willingness to resolve their differences, following appeals made by the wife,” the PPRO stated.

Despite the indication of a private resolution, the police emphasized that the legal process is still active. Hon. Agbor has been released to a “reliable surety” while investigators finalize their findings.

Once the investigation is concluded, the Command intends to submit the case file to the state’s highest legal office.

“The case file will be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for legal advice upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation,” the statement confirmed.

The Command concluded by assuring the general public that the matter is being handled with “utmost professionalism” and in strict adherence to established legal procedures.
