Mr. Anietie B. Akpan, the Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of PillarToday Newspaper, has passed away.
According to an official press statement released by the media organization, the veteran journalist died in the early hours of Monday, August 3, 2026.
Described by colleagues as the “intellectual compass” of the newsroom, Mr. Akpan was a prominent voice for truth, fairness, and responsible journalism throughout Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. His leadership and commitment to public-interest reporting were instrumental in establishing PillarToday as a trusted news source in the region.

In the statement signed by the Chief Operating Officer, Pastor Joseph Kingston, on behalf of management, the organization expressed deep grief over the loss, highlighting Mr. Akpan’s extensive legacy as a mentor to young reporters and media practitioners.
“Mr. Anietie Akpan is leaving behind a legacy of integrity, excellence, and selfless service that will continue to inspire not only us in PillarToday but future generations of media practitioners. Although his physical presence is no longer with us, his ideals, principles, and enduring legacy will continue to guide our work.”
The management extended its condolences to Mr. Akpan’s family, friends, and the Cross River State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course.
