A 49-year-old man, late Humphrey Obi, has been macheted to death over alleged land tussle between the people of Umuenu quarters and Enugwu quarters of Umuawulu community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Obi a father of four children and a former Chairman of the Umuenu village was reported to have be attacked by land grabbers from their neighbouring Enugwu quarters while farming in the alleged disputed land.
His death was announced during a peaceful protest held at the Umuenu townhall on Wednesday, July, 15th, 2026.
The protesters led by the President general of Umuenu quarters, Comrade Benneth Mbolu, marched round the quarters carrying different placards with various inscriptions such as: “Enugwu quarters leave our ancestral land alone, Agu Udo/Agu Ofu land belonging to us alone, please Enugwu leaders we know you have money and influence leave our land for us, Anambra deputy governor, Dr Onyedikachukwu Ibezim, this is a possession matter and not boundary issue, Umuenu is protesting against land grabbers, Enugwu leave our community land alone, Enugwu stop fighting Ndi-Umuenu of their ancestral land, among others.

Speaking further with Journalists shortly after the protest, Comrade Mbolu appeal to governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to urgently intervene by stoping the people of Enugwu quarters from entering the disputed land to prevent further killing of his people, noting that the land in question is still before the High Court Awka.
“We are appealing to our Solution governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo not to allow any influence from any quarters to cede our ancestral land or part of it to Enugwu quarters as they are trespasser already stopped by the courts.
“We are also appealing to the State deputy governor, Dr Onyedikachukwu Ibezim not to be bias while discharging his responsibility as the head of Anambra State Boundary Commission.
“As I speak, the land tussle has claimed the live of our former Chairman, late Humphrey Obi, who happened to be the only child of his aged parent. There is serious intention now in our quarters. We don’t longer go to farmer again. We don’t longer sleep with our two eyes close again because of fear of the unknown. We want the governor to stop the people of Enugwu quarters from entering the disputed land until judgement is pronounced by the Court.
“The land in question belong to Umuenu people and not Enugwu as they petition.
“We are not agitating for boundary with Enugwu quarters which is why we don’t want the deputy governor to intervene because he is bias. Our statement of ownership is before the High Court Awka with suit no-A/82/2021. We want the court process to continue. We want our ancestral land in full and not half.
“Obi was brutally macheted to death by land grabbers from Enugwu quarters.
This protest is to let the government of Anambra State and the general public to know what we are going through in the hands of Enugwu money bags and influencers. We are law abide citizens of Nigeria, we want our land and a total Justice for our slain leader, Mbolu further appealed.
One of the protesters, 96-year-old Elder Stephen Okechukwu Okoye, who also spoke, passionately begged governor Soludo and other concern stakeholders in Anambra State to urgently intervene in the situation to avoid total break down of law and order in the peaceful Umuawulu community.
A widow to the slain leader, Mrs Nkechi Obi who couldn’t hold her tears of pains, sorry and sadness, appealed to the State government to help fitch out those behind her husband death and made them to face Justice.
She lamented that the unfortunate incident has stopped her four children from furthering their education via hardship.
