Officers of the Cross River State Police Command have arrested a 35-year-old man, Okputu Bright, following allegations of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in Yala Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Sunday Eitokpah.

According to the statement, the victim’s father formally reported the incident at the Okpoma Divisional Police Headquarters on October 24, 2026. The alleged assault took place a week earlier, on October 18, 2026.

The suspect reportedly lured the young girl to a location within the community, where he allegedly carried out the assault before abandoning her.

Following the report, the young girl was immediately referred to a general hospital for a comprehensive medical examination, while police operatives tracked down and apprehended the suspect.

Meanwhile, the State Command has ordered a swift wrap-up of the preliminary inquiry to facilitate a smooth transfer of the case file to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further detailed investigation.

Reiterating the police force’s dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, emphasized that crimes against minors will be met with firm action.

“The Command reiterates its commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable persons. We urge members of the public to report suspected sexual offences promptly and assure that such allegations will be handled professionally, with due regard for the victim’s welfare, confidentiality, and the requirements of the law,” the statement reads in part.

The police command also reminded the public that the suspect remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

“Members of the public are urged to refrain from circulating information, images, or other details that could identify the child or expose her to further harm as the investigation continues,” the statement added.

The SCID is expected to conclude its investigation shortly before charging the suspect to court.
