2026 Army Day Celebration: COAS reaffirms force’s commitment to national service, professionalism

The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the force’s commitment to national service, professionalism and the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Shaibu stated this during an interdenominational Church Service held to Mark the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 at St Peter’s Military Church Protestant Military Cantonment Onitsha Anambra State, on Sunday, June 28th, 2026, as part of activities marking the day.

The Chief of Army Staff who was represented at the Church service by the Commanding Officer 14 Field Engineer Regiment Onitsha, Lt Col Eric Kpamber, said the prayer session provided an opportunity to thank God for His continued mercies, reflect on the achievements of the Nigerian Army, honour fallen heroes and renew the Service’s commitment to safeguarding the nation.

He further commended officers and soldiers for their sacrifices, dedication and professionalism in defending Nigeria, describing the Army as a symbol of patriotism, resilience and unwavering commitment to the country’s sovereignty throughout its 163-year history.

He highlighted the theme of this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” describing it as a call for reflection, renewal and rededication to the Service’s core values.

He reiterated the Force’s commitment to building a professional, combat-ready and welfare-driven Army under the “Soldier First” concept, aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness while prioritising the welfare of personnel.

He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the military and paid tribute to officers and soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of Nigeria’s unity and territorial integrity.

The Special Sunday service was led by Onitsha Military Cantonment Zonal Chaplain, Capt Rev MM Ezra  who offered prayers for Nigeria, its leaders, members of the Armed Forces and personnel currently serving in various operational theatres across the country.

The Church Service also attracted formation officers, soldiers, and Christian faithful who joined in praying for lasting peace, security and progress in the country.
