In line with the Inspector General of Police directive on internal security overhaul, the Cross River State Police Command has officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). The move which is part of ongoing police reforms aimed at curbing kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence across the state.

The VCRU effectively replaces several existing tactical formations, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, and the Anti-Cultism Squad. The consolidation is intended to streamline operations and provide a more “swift, intelligence-led, and professional” response to violent crime.

Cross River Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, speaking during the inauguration in Calabar on Friday, described the establishment of the unit as a vital evolution in how the command engages with the public.

“This initiative is a strategic step towards modern, accountable, and community-oriented policing,” CP Afegbua stated. He stated that the unit is rooted in “professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights.”

To ensure effective coverage of the state’s unique geography, the VCRU will operate from its headquarters at the State Command in Calabar, with two additional operational sectors: Sector 1 (North Axis): Covering Ikom and Ogoja.

Sector 2 (Central Axis): Covering Akamkpa and Ugep.

CSP Titus Udofia has been appointed as the pioneer Commander of the unit. According to the Command, personnel deployed to the VCRU underwent rigorous screening and specialized training in the lawful use of force and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The launch comes with a stern warning against the “unprofessional conduct” that has historically marred tactical units. The Command explicitly stated that unlawful stop-and-search operations, harassment, profiling, and extortion are strictly prohibited within the new unit.

To reinforce transparency, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, announced a dedicated complaints mechanism. Members of the public are encouraged to report any misconduct directly via the hotline 08137083052 or at the Complaints Desk in the State Command Headquarters.

The Command also urged residents to support the new unit by providing timely and credible information. The VCRU has established a digital presence on Facebook and Instagram under the handle @VCRU CRS to facilitate better communication with the tech-savvy populace.

“The Cross River State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property through professional, humane, and accountable policing,” the Command stated.
