Victims of the devastating fire that gutted the popular Calabar Spar Mall have issued a passionate appeal for immediate public and private assistance to rebuild their businesses ahead of the peak festive season.
The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, 2026, causing extensive structural damage and destroying goods and livelihoods across multiple retail outlets within the complex.
In a joint statement released by the affected shop owners and business operators, the victims expressed deep concern over the timing of the disaster, noting the mall’s critical role in hosting thousands of tourists and residents during the annual festivities.

“Calabar Spar Mall occupies a very important position at the heart of Calabar. Beyond being a commercial centre, it has become an important meeting point for businesses, families, visitors, tourists and investors who come into our State,” the victims stated in their collective release. “It is therefore with deep pain and concern that we draw attention to the recent fire outbreak… which affected several tenants and caused significant damage to our businesses and means of livelihood.”
The statement highlighted the urgency of recovery efforts, particularly with preparations underway for the 2026 Calabar Carnival, reputed as Africa’s biggest street party. The victims emphasized that restoring commercial operations at the hub is vital for the state’s tourism and economic landscape during the upcoming holiday season.
“As we approach the Christmas season and the 2026 Calabar Carnival, the need for collective support becomes even more urgent. A vibrant Calabar Spar Mall will contribute to the experience of visitors, tourists, families and investors who will be coming to Calabar,” they added.
Despite the setback, the business owners commended the State Government for its leadership and support following the inferno. They expressed deep appreciation to the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the First Lady, Bishop Dr. Mrs. Eyoawan Bassey Otu, praising their “People First Agenda” and ongoing commitment to peace, unity, and inclusive development across the state.
The tenants extended their gratitude to members of the National Assembly, State Assembly members, local council chairmen, corporate organizations, religious institutions, and traditional leaders for their solidarity.
Calling for a unified relief effort, the victims appealed directly to government leaders, international donor agencies, non-governmental organizations, churches, and well-meaning individuals to provide financial and material assistance to help rebuild the facility and aid recovery.
“Calabar is one family. Cross River State is one family. We have always been supportive of one another,” the statement read. “We believe in the magnanimity of the spirit of our people, individually and collectively, to come to our aid so that we can restore the services that have always made our city the pride of our residents and visitors.”
The business owners expressed optimism that with swift intervention, the community could transform the tragic disaster into a testament of resilience, compassion, and unity for Cross River.
