ACRIMMERS Pays Courtesy Visit to Akamkpa Chairman, Seeks to Develop Local Acting Talent

By Kelvin Obambon

The Association of Cross River Movie Makers (ACRIMMERS) paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Area, Hon. Felix Akposi, to request the council’s support for initiatives aimed at discovering and grooming local talent for Nigeria’s film industry (Nollywood).

Speaking at the council headquarters in Akamkpa on Monday, ACRIMMERS Chairman Godwin Obono, said the association was established to address the under-representation of Cross River indigenes in Nollywood. He noted that despite the industry’s significant economic potential, many indigenes of the state have yet to benefit fully from available opportunities.

Obono, an actor, producer and director, outlined plans to hold auditions in Akamkpa to identify, train and showcase local talent to a national audience. He also proposed the development of an “epic village” – a dedicated film production hub where producers and directors from across the country could shoot movies.

According to Obono, the epic village would stimulate local economic activity by creating demand for a range of skills across the film production value chain, from set construction and costume design to catering and hospitality.

Responding, the Council Chairman, Hon. Felix Akposi welcomed the delegation and described ACRIMMERS’ initiative as commendable. He said the project, if well executed, could promote youth development and empowerment in the area and pledged the local government’s support for genuine programmes that create jobs and empower Akamkpa youths.

On the proposal for an epic village, Hon. Akposi noted that Akamkpa’s natural assets – including attractions such as Qua Falls – provide attractive locations for film productions. He pledged to support viable plans that leverage these features to attract filmmakers and stimulate local investment.

The meeting was attended by the Council Secretary, Mr. Christian Attah.
