The Cross River State Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Development has announced the commencement of a statewide distribution of improved SAMPEA 20-T PBR cowpea seeds to local farmers, beginning Monday, September 21, 2026.
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Hon. Johnson Andiambey Ebokpo, and dated 17 September, 2026, the SAMPEA 20-T variety developed by the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), features high genetic purity and genetic resistance to Maruca vitrata, a primary pod-borer pest known for destroying cowpea yields. The variety is engineered for early maturity, higher yield performance, and significantly reduced reliance on chemical insecticides compared to conventional crops.
The Commissioner highlighted that the agricultural intervention forms part of a broader strategy to boost local food production, reinforce food security, and enhance nutrition across the state.
“The intervention is aimed at increasing cowpea production, strengthening food security and improving access to nutritious food, particularly for women and children, while enhancing farmers’ productivity and livelihoods,” the statement reads.
The roll-out will be executed in direct partnership with the state chapters of the Cowpea Farmers Association and Women in Agriculture (WIA).
To receive seeds, interested farmers are instructed to visit their respective Local Government Councils starting Monday for mandatory documentation and pickup. The Ministry emphasized that farmers must follow the official distribution guidelines and issued a crucial safety warning regarding the supplied material.
“Farmers are advised to adhere strictly to the designated collection arrangements. The seeds are solely for planting purposes and are not for human consumption.”
